Autoimmune thyroid disease is a chronic disease affecting the ability of thyroid glands to produce hormones. It is one of the most prevalent endocrine disorders affecting the worldwide population. Autoimmune conditions like Hashimotos disease and Graves disease are the main causes of thyroid disorders. In Graves disease, the immune system mistakenly produces autoantibodies that attack the thyroid and pituitary gland, causing overproduction of thyroid hormones. On the other hand, Hashimoto thyroiditis is when the immune system destroys healthy thyroid gland cells causing progressive fibrosis that results in reduced synthesis and secretion of thyroid hormones into the bloodstream.
