During the first stage, pilots complete an online course called "Flight Training Online" (FTO) to learn the basics of flight and how to use the equipment. This program is provided by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and is the most common way to become a commercial pilot. After completing the FTO, pilots move on to a series of three physical tests that are used to evaluate their skills and competence. These tests are designed to evaluate their knowledge of: aerodynamics, meteorology, and aircraft systems. The tests include a written test, an oral test, and a flight test. After successfully completing the written and oral tests, the pilot must complete a flight test with an FAA-certified flight instructor.
