Addressing a one-day workshop held in relation with the State-level celebration of International Domestic Worker’s Day, Mr. John told the Planning Board would focus on the social financial and labour matters dealt by domestic workers and maids in the Economic Review 2012. State Planning Board Member C.P. John also added that the upcoming State Plan will earmark to set up a welfare fund committee for domestic help. According to him, “Constitution of a welfare fund board will be a major step towards addressing the labour issues of workers in this unorganized sector. If the non-governmental organisations and unions working in this sector present a project proposal it can be definitely taken up by the Planning Board.” The workshop was inaugurated jointly by the Minister for the Welfare of Scheduled Tribes and Youth Affairs P.K. Jayalakshmi and was meticulously help up by the Indian National Trade Union Congress or INTUC, Self Employed Women’s Association, and Hind Mazdoor Sabha or HMS. Ms. Jayalakshmi told that the issues faced by domestic help, particularly those working in other countries, required to be focused. She also added, “Domestic workers were like labourers in any other sector. Their rights need to be protected by law. The first step towards this is initiating a public discussion on the issues faced by domestic workers”. R. Chandrashekharan, the INTUC State President who attended the function also out his views saying that Union and State governments should together draw up projects for the welfare of domestic help. Sonia George, the SEWA Union State secretary added that the Government of India had lately taken decent steps towards identifying the labour rights of domestic help. This embraces the accepting of the International Labour Organization or ILO convention Decent work for domestic workers’ and the admittance of domestic help in Anti Sexual Harassment Bill. The Union government has formulated a work force to work out a policy on domestic workers’ welfare. Describing the workplace and working atmosphere of domestic help was the major hardship in the devising of a legal infrastructure to secure such domestic help, according to Ms. George.
