A UK security company, Cloudmark, has reported a spike in mobile-originated spam over the past week.
The spam sends invitations to tablet android users to install free versions of Angry Birds Star Wars or The Need For Speed Most Wanted.
When users follow the links, they install spamware that ends up sending thousands of similar SMS invitations to their contacts from their phone.
"You better have an unlimited message plan or your phone bill may come as a bit of a shock, " Cloudmark said in a statement.
Cloudmark said the program was not sophisticated like one you would see on your PC, but it meant the user has to pay for the messages, not the spammer.
"Now that we know it can be done, we can expect to see more complex attacks that are harder to take down, " they said.
